10 Things You May Not Know About Chiropractic.

What is Chiropractic?

Simply put, chiropractic is a lifestyle. As one of the largest primary-contact healthcare professions today, chiropractic care offers non-invasive, hands-on treatment aimed at diagnosing, treating, and preventing disorders related to the spine, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system.

Doctors of chiropractic tailor their approach to the unique needs of each patient. After taking a thorough medical history and providing a detailed diagnosis, chiropractors develop and implement a comprehensive treatment plan. This plan may include rehabilitative exercises, nutritional and dietary guidance, and lifestyle modifications to promote overall well-being.

Chiropractors focus on treating the individual as a whole, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems with the body’s overall health.

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, or chiropractic manipulation, is a non-invasive, highly skilled procedure in which the doctor applies a controlled force to one or more misaligned (“subluxated”) vertebrae in the spine or other joints in the body. This precise adjustment helps relieve pain and discomfort by restoring a joint’s natural range of motion, optimizing function, and increasing the flow of nutrients into the joint capsules.

Correcting subluxations provides numerous benefits, including reducing pain and inflammation, alleviating muscle spasms and tension, normalizing joint biomechanics, and eliminating nerve irritation and interference. These improvements contribute to the overall health and wellness of each individual patient.

What is subluxation?

Doctors of chiropractic are the only healthcare professionals specifically trained to diagnose and treat vertebral and extra-spinal subluxations. A subluxation refers to a misalignment of a vertebra or joint relative to its adjacent structures, either above or below.

Misalignments in the spinal column can disrupt normal spinal function, leading to mechanical stress and overuse of the surrounding structures. This includes muscles, ligaments, discs, and other spinal tissues that support the joint. Over time, abnormal functioning accelerates this mechanical stress and overuse, causing these structures to deteriorate more rapidly.

These abnormalities often result in pain, palpatory tenderness, inflammation, decreased mobility, and muscle pain or hypertonicity. Chiropractic care addresses these issues, helping restore proper alignment and function to improve overall spinal health.

What is that "popping" or "cracking" sound heard during an adjustment?

The sound often heard during a chiropractic adjustment is called "cavitation." Cavitation occurs when gases are released from the joint capsule as two adjacent structures are separated.

During a spinal manipulation, the applied force separates the articular surfaces of a fully encapsulated synovial joint, reducing the pressure within the joint cavity. This low-pressure environment allows gases dissolved in the synovial fluid, primarily carbon dioxide, to form a bubble. The bubble then rapidly collapses, producing the characteristic "popping" sound.
