Local Doctor Earns Highest Certification in Whiplash Injury Biomechanics & Traumatology
Did you know that over three million whiplash injuries occur each year resulting from motor vehicle crashes? Of these whiplash injuries, 500,000 people will have chronic problems and up to 300,000 will have some degree of disability. Apart from the effect on health, there’s a significant cost to society. Approximately $43 billion of total annual HARM is attributable to whiplash and related injuries. (HARM is a metric for quantifying the total societal cost of road trauma.)
Dr. Jimmy R. Sayegh of Elevate Chiropractic says consumers need to be educated about the issues surrounding whiplash – both concerning its treatment and, importantly, its prevention. In order to more effectively treat persons injured in motor vehicle crashes, Dr. Sayegh recently achieved his advanced certification in Whiplash and Brain Injury Traumatology through the Spine Research Institute of San Diego (SRISD), a research center devoted to the investigation of motor vehicle crash injury. For the past 22 years, SRISD has focused research and education on the more common spinal injuries sustained in everyday motor vehicle crashes, such as whiplash and mild traumatic brain injuries.
Dr. Sayegh became familiar with the epidemiology of whiplash and brain injuries, the mechanical factors of motor vehicle crashes, and the wide range of physical injuries and clinical conditions that can occur. He learned how to conduct comprehensive physical examinations and all about the latest applications of cutting edge imaging technologies such as CT, MRI, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and others. Dr. Sayegh learned how to provide patients with the most effective and comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation strategies to ensure optimal outcome potential. The program also included an intense discussion of forensic risk analysis which considers how the various known risk factors can increase a person’s chance for injury or long-term symptoms.
By understanding the unusual biomechanics of this form of trauma, diagnostic methods and treatment can be much more effectively administered in the clinical setting.

Spinal Injuries and Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries are on the Rise
Although the number of fatalities from motor vehicle collisions (MVC) has reached an all-time low in recent years. Innovations such as laminated windshields, collapsible steering wheels, more effective restraint systems, and an increasingly more crashworthy overall structure have greatly improved the survivability of these crashes. But the low fatality statistics tells only half of the story. Figures that are less often reported are the millions of non-fatal crashes that raise the annual estimated comprehensive price tag of MVC to more than $346 billion. The majority of these occur at speed changes of under 15 mph according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Three million of these crashes result in whiplash-type injuries, according to the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, contributing about $43
billion (12%) to this huge comprehensive cost. This is one motivation behind the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (www.iihs.org) practice of evaluating and ranking the relative safety of cars with regard to whiplash protection. Without a decent rating in this category, the car, SUV, or truck will not earn the Institute’s Top Safety Pick award.
So why this high cost for whiplash injuries? Because nearly half of the victims require prolonged treatment and suffer long-term symptoms. Many suffer mild traumatic brain injuries as well. About 10% of the victims become disabled. And most physicians simply do not have the specialized training to provide the most effective treatment. Dr. Jimmy R. Sayegh has been certified by the Spine Research Institute of San Diego as an expert in this very specialized area of science, which requires insight into the physics of the actual crash mechanics and the occupant kinematics—or motions resulting from the crash—as well as all of the latest diagnostic methods and treatments approaches. For the past 15 years, the institute has been conferring this highest level of certification to only 100 physicians each year.
